Get Great Landscaping Photography Using Your Cell Phone

Landscaping photography using your cell phone

Because Schnebly Hill Digital Marketing works with a good amount of landscaping clients, we recognize that the imagery you use to brand your landscaping company is crucially important.  So, we wanted to put together this simplified guide for how to get great landscaping photography using your cell phone.

Step 1

If Possible, Always Photograph At Sunrise or Sunset

There is about a 1 hour window as the sun is rising and setting each day when the lighting is softer and warmer, and if at all possible, you should take your photos at one of these two times.  Evening photos are also great to show off low voltage lighting.

Step 2

Always Shoot Horizontally

You should NEVER shoot in vertical mode, unless you’re photographing a tree, person, or tall building.  Landscaping photos should almost ALWAYS be horizontal.

Step 3

Try Different Angles & Distances

Start by capturing the entire scene, from a wide angle.  Move around and take shots from several positions. Sometimes just a small change in angle can make the design pop.  Also, don’t forget to get some closer in shots for details, like fire & water features, boulder placements, etc.

Step 4

Keep Your Camera Level!

A crooked photo can make your work look off, even if it’s not. Take a second to check that your camera is level from side to side and front to back.

Step 5

Get Low to the Ground

Since you’re showing off work that’s actually on the ground, squat or kneel down when taking your landscaping photos. Shooting from 1–2 feet off the ground gives a better view of textures and depth.

When You're Ready for the Next Level. . .

Working from the ground is a great place to get started on great photos from only your cell phone.  If you’ll follow the above steps, you should get some really nice photos.  When you’re ready to go to the next level, and if the property warrants it, aerial images from a drone can be an excellent way to showcase your landscaping photos.

Or, you can always hire Schnebly Hill Digital Marketing to capture dynamite images for you!
